We've been reflecting on the challenges surrounding us lately, especially when it comes to
differing beliefs among those we care about. It can be tough to have meaningful conversations without them spiraling into anger or damaging our relationships.
So, how can we engage in discussions that allow us to share our perspectives in a way that others will truly listen? It’s definitely possible, but it requires thoughtfulness and presence throughout the dialogue.
We recently listened to an episode of the podcast Change Agent, titled "The Talk," and I highly recommend it. Here are some key takeaways:
Validate the Person: Remember, they are human. Reflect on why you care about them.
Be Curious: Explore their beliefs. Ask questions and listen to understand their perspective.
Be Vulnerable: Share your own experiences and stories.
Key Reminders:
Act with Kindness: Focus on what you appreciate about the person.
Manage Triggers: If you feel triggered, take a moment to breathe and detach your emotions from the conversation.
Accept Differences: Enter discussions without the intent to change their mind; aim instead for mutual understanding.
Ultimately, preserving our important relationships is what matters most.
Warm regards,
Coach John and Coach Dawn
