How do you get your young kids to understand their feelings?

Updated: Nov 15, 2022

My grandson is a complicated fellow. I suspect he is a highly sensitive person like his mom. When he feels something, he often lets the world know, or he tries to. Often his emotions come out as outbursts or meltdowns. I have seen a huge change in him since my daughter started using the Loluis Feelings Thermometer. I have noticed changes in his behavior because he is able to share how he is feeling and what he needs to calm down.

This weekend when I was watching him, he got upset over something which to me seemed minor. Earlier I might of told him he needed a time out to get in control. Instead we went to the chart and he pointed out to me that he was in the blue zone. I asked him what he needed and he showed me he needed a hug. We held each other for a few seconds and it calmed him down. He was able to help me understand what he was going through and what he needed. This put him in charge, in a positive way.

This is the link to the Loluis Feelings Thermometer on Amazon. The one we use is for young kids but they have different ones for different ages and groups. Another benefit is that as adults sometimes we are in the red zone, or blue zone. The thermometer helps young kids understand where we are at and what we need.

No matter what our age is, we can always use some help explaining how we are feeling and why. This is why I love teaching the Positive Intelligence classes. We can take deep dives into our own feelings and understand why we are feeling that way. Why do we spend so much time focusing on the negative feelings when we are upset? In PQ we learn how to shift out of those negative feeling faster, back into a more positive mindset. With that in mind, I am scheduling two sets of PQ classes this fall.

Positive Intelligence for Parents – a class with other parents who not only want to learn how to build their mental muscles, but also want to be able to teach these techniques to their own kids.

Positive Intelligence for Women – a class for like minded women who want to grow their mental muscles and find more time for themselves and the relationships that are important to them.
